Definition

Bereavement leave provides time off for employees to grieve and handle matters following the death of a family member. While not required by federal law, most employers offer 3-5 days for immediate family. California requires 5 days of unpaid bereavement leave for employers with 5+ employees.

Legal Context

Not required federally. California requires 5 days unpaid (2023). Illinois requires 2 weeks for child loss (250+ employees). Oregon includes bereavement under OFLA.
